diabetica
My artwork examines the psychological aspects that accompany the physical components of disease. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of four and have been creating art with a diabetic flare for over a decade. I have created a dialogue between the mental and physical components of my condition as they are symbiotic, holding equal impact in the management of my disease. My images convey, not only a personal documentation, but also offer a public narrative about understanding disease and working within the confines of coping with illness. I often use the tools of my trade(insulin bottles, syringes, glucose tablets, test strips) in conjunction with photography to create what I like to refer to as diabetica. Paneling and repetition work as tools to express routine, and reference the normalcy of managing illness in daily life.
